Begümhan Şimşir, Bachelor 2021, Legal editor in ICRC’s International Review of the Red Cross

I graduated from the Turkish German University in 2021. In the September of the same year, I started my LL.M. in International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights at Geneva Academy as a full scholarship holder. My LL.M. thesis on the protection of wounded and sick in the conduct of hostilities, written under the supervision of Professor Andrew Clapham, was nominated for Henry Dunant Prize. During my LL.B. and LL.M. I worked with international organizations such as UNESCO, HRMI and Generation Human Rights. In March 2022, I served as the rights rapporteur at UNESCO’s high-level policy conference in Paris. From August 2022 to January 2023, I worked on the World Disasters Report 2022 for the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent. Since February 2023, I have been working as the legal editor in ICRC’s International Review of the Red Cross. The legal education and the support of my professors encouraging me to participate in extracurricular activities contributed a lot to my academic and professional life after my time at the Turkish-German University. In addition to the lectures on Turkish, German and international law, I participated in the TGU activities. I had the chance to represent my university in Jean Pictet, Jessup and All-European Humanitarian and Refugee Law Moot Court Competitions and participated in different student clubs. The education I got at Turkish-German University played an important role in my academic and professional growth and prepared me well for my next steps in life.
